Middle School Language Arts Spotlight

Sixth Grade

The sixth grade is blessed to spend part of their Language Arts time with Ms. Beckendorf and the other part with me, Mrs. Wilaby.  During my part of the day, we are working on writing and grammar.  The first major writing project of the year is culminating in a published piece that describes their unreasonable pet…imagination is a blessed thing!  They have learned to use voice in their writing and to be organized so the reader can understand what they are saying.

The sixth graders spent time brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing pieces of their choice this fall.  Lessons were learned about the value of constructive criticism, editing, and revising.  Within all of these writing skills, it is apparent that God has richly blessed each and every one of us….and He has blessed each of us differently!  God is good!   Writing is a way to share a part of ourselves or to create something imaginary for ourselves and others to enjoy.

7th Grade

“In My Head” Final Project: After spending some time brainstorming, free-writing, and exploring ideas, each student chose on of their ideas that they wanted to expand, write, revise, edit and publish.

8th Grade

The eighth-grade class has been digging into the human story, seeing God’s hands in the lives of those in the past, and seeing how He is in our lives today as well.  Time remembering, growing, and caring for others has been time well spent. The holocaust experience was shared with us through the novel  The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen and then the understanding was deepened through a visit to the Holocaust museum on the Washington D.C. trip.  Upon their return, through their next novel, they traveled to Mississippi in the early 1930s with the Logan family in the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor.

We are thankful for the gift of words and language.  God has blessed us with the ability to read, write, and use words to encourage and grow others.  We are thankful for all He has blessed us with!
