We believe in equipping a life with a foundation of faith. At St. John’s Lutheran School, our middle school program is focused on the development of the whole child through a faith-based curriculum. Our classes are taught by caring, loving staff that offer decades of experience in Christian education.
Curriculum
Our private middle school program offers students daily instruction in each our core subject areas: Religion, reading, language arts, math, science/STEM, and history. Instruction is provided from a Biblical perspective, drawing meaning for each areas of study from the context of God’s Word.
Religion
Students have religion 4 times a week for 30 mins each day. On the 5th day they attend chapel for 30 mins. In 5th grade, we focus on the 6 chief parts of christian doctrine and how they apply to our lives today. We learn about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and the role they play in our past, present and future. We learn about faith heroes such as Martin Luther and the role he played in the beginning of the Lutheran church. In 6th grade, we focus on both the Old and New Testament. We see that God’s faithfulness to His covenant people is the unifying theme of all the historical books. We work on using scripture in our own personal devotions each week. Students say memory work weekly, which includes the books of the Bible, the commandments and meanings, the Apostle’s Creed, and the petitions to the Lord’s Prayer and meanings.
Language arts/Literature block
Using a number of classic and current novels, we focus on literary elements using texts that are of high interest for the students. Throughout the year we do a number of writing units which include narrative writing, opinion writing, and informative writing, literary analysis, how-to, and product review. We use the 6+1 writing traits to help them produce clear, organized, and interesting writings. Fifth graders have an English text book we use to make sure they have a handle on the basics of the English language so they can use it properly in their writing. Sixth graders are exposed to Shakespeare and his plays and use them in a number of projects.
Math
Leveled to help students participate in the level that is right for them. 5th grade students have the option of 5th grade math or Course 1. 6th grade students have the option of Course 1 or PreAlgebra. In these classes, students are given step-by-step examples to complete the lessons. Students are provided the precise language and structure necessary to build mathematical understanding and proficiency. As students progress through the classes, students will gain mastery of more challenging topics that build on foundational concepts taught in elementary school.
FOSS Science/STEM
This course focuses on developing understanding of both scientific and engineering practices. The curriculum teaches through hands-on experiences that will guide students through planning investigations, analyzing data, and forming explanations. The course will integrate technology, engineering, and math throughout the curriculum. The concepts covered will be Variables and Design, Mixtures and Solution, Weather and Climate, and Living Systems
History
Students study Minnesota history, American history, and current world events. Students will learn to think like a historian and analyze events that impacted the United States and Minnesota throughout our history and currently.
Technology
Each private middle school student in the Junior High is assigned a Chromebook for the year. Every classroom is fitted with a SMART board and a Chromecast that allows both teacher and students to actively participate in teaching and learning. Technology is used as a tool to help enhance the curriculum and student outcomes.
We believe in a well-rounded education. To that end, students have recess and PE three times a week, and attend art, Spanish, flex time, study hall, and computer science twice each week. Additionally, they go to music and have the opportunity to participate in the band program. All resource classes are taught by teachers who specialize in their field.
Physical Education
5th and 6th grade students meet 2 days a week for 40 minutes each time. Activities include, fitness stations, sport skills, and group games.
Art
The class meets 2 days a week for 80 minutes. Each month the students are introduced to one of the Elements of Art. Throughout the month they meet artists whose work focuses on this element. They use these artists’ work to inspire them to create their own projects focusing on the element of the month.
Music
Music class and choir are each offered once a week. All students are required to participate in the school’s choir which meets weekly for 45 minutes. Students are also able to participate in the school’s band program and the bell choir if they desire.
Spanish
Using Futura Language Professionals, our students experience spanish with a teacher who brings a contagious love for language and culture to the classroom. Futura Language Professionals strive to create lifelong language learners. 5th and 6th grade meet for 50 minutes two times each week.
Computer Science
Students participate in computer classes 2 times a week for 30 minutes each. Students learn about being safe and responsible digital citizens, develop important computer literacy skills, and participate in coding courses.
The Athletic program of St. John’s middle school program is dedicated to enriching the lives of its students through sports. Our athletic teams prove that hard work and dedication translates to success on the playing field and on the court. Beyond athletic achievement, the focal point of the program is seeing our student-athletes represent the character of Christ. As we want everyone watching to witness student-athletes who play with passion and purpose.
