Hello From St. John’s Second Grade! Enjoy a recap from the month of February in our classroom.

February sure was a busy month in second grade! We focused on showing lots of love and kindness to those around us, and celebrated the greatest love that we receive, which comes from our best friend, JESUS! As 2nd graders learned for memory work in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”  There is no greater love than the love we have in Jesus.

Second grade is a wonderful year and time when students build growth and confidence in their academic skills, become more responsible, independent and we also have a lot of fun!

February was filled with many special events. First, we celebrated Groundhog’s Day and learned facts all about the groundhog and then put our writing skills to work, sharing lots of fun facts about the groundhog.! The 100th Day of School was another special day students enjoyed celebrating. They even had fun dressing up as older people! We celebrated God’s love for us and our friendship with each other during our Heart’s for Jesus party. We are very excited to have parents volunteer their time and spend the afternoon with us doing games, crafts, snacks and of course sharing valentines with each other. The class also took time during the month to learn about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in honor of President’s Day. Students are learning about heroes in social studies and understanding how to research information about a famous person from history and present their information in a Google slides show. These are just some of the special things that took place this past month..

During the school year, 2nd graders enjoy Star of the Week. This is a highlight and something special each student looks forward to doing. We love learning more about the wonderful friends God has given us through each student’s special sharing week. Each of us is made unique and special by God and we enjoy celebrating each other. We often enjoy hearing about a student’s hobbies, their favorite things, participate in projects, sometimes enjoy a treat and even meet special people or pets!

Every year we look forward to celebrating Lutheran Schools Week the last week of January. With special dress up days, a field trip, virtual mission trip to Australia, a tribe relay event and an opportunity to donate cereal boxes to Bountiful Basket, we were able to have fun but also reflect on the blessing this school is to all of us. We love our St. John’s family!

Second graders work hard to advance their skills in the world of writing through poems, stories, journal entries and book reports, just to name a few. You can always find something to read in our classroom. We of course LOVE to read and are learning new words and sounds all the time as we build vocabulary, expression and fluency. Reading different levels of chapter books is always a new and exciting thing. Students look forward to a fun animal research, writing and paper mache project at the end of the year. They look forward to having 8th graders help with making their animals. Students become more confident in their math skills, as they learn different strategies for solving problems and work with bigger numbers. They also focus on doing their best to master their math facts.   There are so many fun things we love to learn and do in 2nd grade!

It is a blessing to be able to attend our wonderful school where we can pray, learn and talk about Christ, be in God’s Word and express our love for Jesus everyday and everything we do. We thank God for all that he gives us, and that he stays CONNECTED to us through the fruits of the spirit, as we have all learned throughout the school year. The 2nd graders are looking forward to leading chapel later this month and sharing a message focused on the fruit of the spirit, “goodness.”   As we fix our eyes on the cross this Lent season, we remember the gift of his gracious love, forgiveness and salvation that came through Christ’s death and resurrection. In the spirit of love that fills our hearts a bit more this time of year, the students would like to share with you why/what they love about St. John’s.
