A Peek into 7th Grade
Written by: Addie Gilmore, Kaylee Koepsell, Alexa Ulanoski, and Mrs. Wilaby
The 7th grade class has been up to so many fun activities and projects even though it’s only been 5 full weeks of school. Some of them include extracurricular activities such as volleyball and cross-country. We have also completed writing, art, religion, and technology projects. In addition, Independent Reading time is something that we look forward to each day. Another activity that everyone has enjoyed this year is cribbage. Each and every student learned how to play cribbage like a pro, thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Wilaby. Saving one of the best for last, each 7th-grade student has been assigned a Reading Buddy to read with, which we all look forward to! Read more about these exciting activities below!
Extracurricular Activities: Volleyball and Cross-Country
This fall the 7th graders got to participate in school sports such as volleyball and cross country. The St. John’s girls volleyball team consisted of 15 players, 4 of them being 7th graders. They played in two tournaments and did very well in both of them. They have had lots of games with tons of fun.
Our St. John’s cross country team had runners from 4th – 8th grade. They competed in 5 meets throughout the season, plus the state meet. At State, the cross-country runners had a chance to qualify for Nationals. The 5-8 grade boys 2-mile runners won the state meet, so they all got to go to Nationals and compete with people from across the country. In addition, Addie Gilmore also qualified as an individual runner. -Addie Gilmore
Projects: Lord’s Prayer presentations
This year the 7th graders got the opportunity to make a presentation on all of the parts of the Lord’s Prayer. They got to look more deeply into the specific parts of the Lord’s prayer and learn about what it really means. They worked in groups to either write, summarize, or draw each petition. After each group finished making their presentation they presented it to the rest of the class and got to see how each group interpreted it. We are so thankful for a God that provides us with all we need, including the prayer He taught us. -Addie Gilmore
English: “Thoughts in My Head” Writing Projects
The seventh graders were so blessed this year to do a “Thoughts in My Head” writing presentation to start the year. Students got to choose a topic going on in their head, anything from family to sports to their favorite vacation. We had a week to finish our writing piece. Then we got a whole editing week to let our classmates, parents, and our teacher, Mrs. Wilaby look it over and make it the best it can be. Then we took time to make our presentations on Book Creator, Canva, Google Slides, and more. After that, we got to present to the class. We had lots of fun writing, creating, and listening to others’ presentations. If your interested in checking them out, click here and enjoy!- Kaylee Koepsell
Independent Reading
We have the opportunity to have lots of independent reading time this year, which some were not too thrilled about to start, but Mrs. Wilaby has helped every single person find multiple books that they enjoy reading. Some people would have never thought they could find reading a book fun, but now they do! Mrs. Wilaby has a bunch of comfortable spots around her room. We take turns rotating through all the spots when independent reading comes. This has been such an amazing opportunity in 7th grade. -Kaylee Kopesell
Cribbage
Thanks to the help of Mr. and Mrs. Wilaby and some of the other students in our class, we all learned how to play cribbage this year. We all liked it so much and even practiced our math skills a bit, which obviously everyone loves so much! Lastly, we would like to thank the PTL for providing us with the money to get all of the cribbage boards. -Alexa Ulanoski
Reading Buddies
We are all loving the opportunity to share the joy of reading with our 1st-grade reading buddies and to help prepare them for 2nd grade. The 7th and 1st grade classes get to meet at least once a month, and each time both classes love getting to know each other more. The majority of the time, our class reads to them in our school library and we share some of our childhood favorites with them. Our class is beyond excited to have reading buddies, and are looking forward to making more memories throughout this year. – Alexa Ulanoski
The year is off to a great start in 7th grade and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year will bring!
