5th and 6th Grade Class Newsletter

The 5th and 6th graders have had a busy year.  They have been, among other things, reading novels, learning about grammar, doing hands-ons science investigations about density and mixtures and solutions, and spending time in God’s word daily.

This year has seen the return of field trips where they have been able to take the learning outside of the school building.  In January they traveled to Lowry Nature Center to spend a cold day outside learning about winter survival.  They got to track animals and learn about how they survive in cold temperatures.  They were able to build shelters in the woods and try their hand at starting fires to keep them warm.  They had time to have fun outdoors as they learned to kick sled on the lake.  The day ended with some downhill sledding fun!  Even though it was chilly they had a great time.

This spring both classes went on an adventure to Base Camp.  While they were there they participated in some challenging but fun team building games.  They learned to trust each other and work together to accomplish their goal.   They spent some time learning about shooting a bow and arrow.  It was so fun to watch them get better and better with each practice round.  The big challenge of the day was rock climbing.  The kids worked hard and overcame some nerves to climb up a very large rock wall.  It was great to see them encouraging and cheering each other on!

Back at school this spring both classes have been working in art class on a 12- section color wheel mandala.  This project is part of their study of color, one of the elements of art they have been studying all year.  They have been working for a month on drawing and coloring this mandala.  They have had to mix colors and also create shades and tints of all the colors to fill in the sections they created.  This project takes a lot of concentration and determination to finish.  The end result is absolutely beautiful.  All their hard work has definitely paid off.

All in all this year has been filled with learning, growth, and fun!
