1st Grade Newsletter

First Grade is an exciting year of learning how to read! We have 12 boys and 9 girls in our class and have many books in our classroom. Our class enjoys listening and reading all kinds of stories. We spend each day having DEAR Time (Drop Everything and Read), while getting cozy in our reading chairs or lying on the floor. Every other week, we spend time with our 7th grade reading buddies while they read stories to us. Now, we are doing some of the reading to them as we get more comfortable reading.

Hibernation Day was where we learned about how God created animals to survive cold winters here. The first graders wore pjs and brought in stuffed animals of those who hibernate. After reading some books, watching some videos, and learning about the animals, we pretended to be those animals. We created dens and burrows with our desks and blankets to spend our cold winter in, searched for food to store up our energy, and finally went into hibernation. We enjoyed reading some books while hibernating.

We celebrated the 100th day of school by making special projects made out of 100 objects. During our day, we played Mystery Number, did 100 jumping jacks, rolled the dice to 100, and also enjoyed some stories connected to 100. We used 100 cups, popsicle sticks, dominoes, legos, Lincoln logs, Tinkertoys, and pattern blocks to create things. We ended the 100 fun with writing about what we would do if we were given $100.

God’s blessings to all of you!
