Director of Academics, Achievement & Parent Relations/Technology

Karna Hagen

Send Email

Karna Hagen is the Director of Academics, Achievement, and Parent Relations here at St. John's Lutheran School. She will also be teaching computer classes, keyboarding, and 5th/7th grade History classes. She graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN in 1993. After graduation, she married Dave Hagen and taught kindergarten for 3+ years in Minnetonka, MN. She took a few years off from teaching while caring for her 2 boys when they were young. Karna returned to teaching when she accepted a position at St. John's, Chaska, in 2005. At St. John's she has had a variety of roles - computer teacher, enrichment, technology coordinator, and has taught in a variety of grade levels from 1st - 4th grade. In her spare time, she loves to watch her boys participate in basketball and track, read, go for bike rides, and spend time with her family.

Jana Beckendorf

Ms. Jana Beckendorf has been teaching at St. Johns since she graduated from Concordia University in St. Paul in 2001.  Her first 5 years were spent teaching 3rd grade.  In 2006 she transitioned to her current position as the 5th grade teacher.  She also teaches some 6th grade classes: Reading, Writing, Science, and Art. She is also currently the Athletics and Activities Director.  During her years at St. Johns Jana has also coached volleyball, softball, and basketball.  When she has the time she enjoys, cafting, watching football, traveling with family and friends, and playing with her niece and nephew.

Before coming to St. John's Lutheran School in 2013, I worked as an Activity Director, an In-Home Day Care Provider, and a Substitute Teacher.  I received a BS in Human Development and Family Studies from South Dakota State University in 1996.  In 2011, I received my MN Teaching License from Crown College.  I live in Chaska with my husband, son, daughter, and cat.

While at St. John's I have taught Kindergarten, Before Care, and PreK.  It is a true blessing to be a part of this amazing place!


First Grade Teacher

Julie Herrmann

Julie Herrmann has been at St. John's for 15 years.  After graduating from Concordia University - Mequon in 1996, she received her first call to St. John's, Chaska.  She began teaching 3rd grade for 3 years and has been in the 1st grade class for the past 12 years. 

During her years at St. John's, she has been involved in various activities and coaching opportunities as well as teaching such as basketball coach, cheerleading and dance coach, member of PTL board and a member of the school board. She has been involved with helping VBS, Sunday School, church nursery, and selling scrip.  She has enjoyed mentoring new teachers along with hosting student teachers in her classroom.

Julie and her husband Troy have been married for 15 years and have been blessed with 3 children.  Logan (12), Kylie (10), and Kassi(6) all attend St. John's.  In her free time, she enjoys being a mom and spending time with her family and their activities and camping.


Second Grade Teacher

Laura Stender

Laura Stender is beginning her 10th year of teaching here at St. John’s.  She graduated from Concordia University, St. Paul in 2008 and received her first call to St. John’s, Chaska. She taught 1st grade her first year, which followed with a move to the 2nd grade classroom, where she has been ever since.

Over the years, Laura has been involved with referring grade school volleyball games and coaching 7th/8th grade volleyball. She has served on school board as well as the school growth committee. Laura has volunteered her time selling Scrip, been a member of PTL board, helped with various junior high activities and spent time in the church nursery.

Laura and her husband Joel have been married for six years and blessed with two daughters, Evelyn (3) and Josie (3 months). In her spare time Laura enjoys being a mom, spending time with family and friends, playing/watching sports and gardening.  


Third Grade Teacher

Kristie McMichael

Kristie graduated from The University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire and has been teaching at St. John's since 1995.  She has taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade.  Kristie and her husband, Jim, have three children and a basset hound.  Kristie enjoys spending time with her family, kayaking, riding bikes, reading, sketching, and painting.


Fourth Grade Teacher

Amy Feek

Amy graduated from Concordia College, Seward, Nebraska with a degree in elementary education in 1993. She came to St. Johns, Chaska in 1995 as a 4th grade educator. During her 17 years at St. Johns, she has also taught a 3-4 combination classroom, 7th grade world history, and 5th grade. Amy earned a master of arts degree in history from Kansas State University in 1999.

Amy is a sports fanatic. She especially likes college football and basketball. Previously she has coached volleyball, softball, and assisted with girl's basketball while at St. Johns. In her free time, Amy enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling, reading, and working out.

I graduated from Concordia University, St. Paul  MN.  I have been teaching 6th grade at St. John's since the spring of 1999.  I have done all my teaching at St. John's. 

I grew up in Young America, MN.  My parents still live there.  I have one younger brother and one older brother.  I have 3 nieces and 3 nephews that I enjoy spending time with.  I have enjoyed coaching volleyball, basketball, and softball at St. John's.  I am currently an Assistant Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Chanhassen High School.  I also like to spend my free time playing sports, hunting, and golfing.


Jr. High Teacher

Kaitlin Budish

Kaitlin Budish has been teaching at St. John’s since 2013. She is a graduate of Crown College where she double majored in Secondary English Education and Christian Studies, and minored in 5th-8th Communication Arts. While in college, she taught studio dance lessons and also coached dance at Mayer Lutheran and Delano high schools. She is currently an assistant Varsity dance coach at Orono High School.

At St. John’s, Kaitlin is the 7th grade homeroom teacher and teaches 5th-8th English and Literature. She is also on the yearbook committee, planning staff for V.I.P. day, assists with the 8th grade Washington D.C. trip, and an admin for the St. John’s Facebook site. She feels very blessed to be able to work with kids of so many ages while at school.

In her personal life, Kaitlin enjoys spending time with her husband, Jason and her 100-pound Great Pyrenees, Athena. She loves to spend time at the lake with her family, traveling, shopping, having coffee dates with friends, and reading/writing. 


Music Teacher

Julie Pallas

As the Director of Parish Music, Julie Pallas directs the adult choir- Messengers of Praise, leads the contemporary worship ensemble, administers the school music program, directs children’s choirs, works with the Sunday School classes to sing in church and present their Christmas Service, directs the school Christmas Service and Spring Musicals, and plans and coordinates all worship activities at St. John’s.

Julie graduated from Concordia, Seward, NE with a BS in Secondary Education , and a double major in English and K-12 music. After graduation she taught English and directed the choirs at Valley Lutheran High School in St. Charles, IL. She also taught English at Mayer Lutheran High School, Mayer, MN. Mrs. Pallas has worked with children’s and adult choirs at St. Mark’s, St. Charles, IL, and Christ Victorious, Victoria, MN before taking over at St. John’s. She considers herself blessed to have worked with and been assisted by a number of fine organists and pianists at St. John’s. She was a member of the University Choir at Valparaiso, University, and sang with the ACappella Choir and Concordia Singers at Concordia.  She has sung with the St. Charles Singers and the Chaska Community Choir. With her children, she has enjoyed participating in theater through the Chaska Valley Family Theater.

Mrs. Pallas is married to Jack Pallas and they have four children who have all attended St. John’s Lutheran School.
